10 Powerful Lessons: from “You Can Heal Your Life”

  1. “Self-approval and self-acceptance in the now are the main keys to positive changes in every area of our lives.” Don’t decide that you will be happy only when you lose the weight or land the good job. Make a choice each day to celebrate your wins and honor the whole process. If you’re really honest with yourself, you’ll see you’re doing pretty great.

  1. Practice mindfulness as often as possible. Become increasingly aware of every thought that arises in your mind. Do your thoughts serve you or hurt you? “There is no written law that says that because you once believed something, you have to continue to believe it forever.” Take inventory. Adjust as needed, while continuing to be kind to yourself.

  1. “If you demand perfection from them (your family), you will demand perfection from yourself, and you will be miserable all your life.” Everyone in your life (especially your family) is a mirror for you, reflecting back at you how you perceive yourself.

  1. “Your mind is a tool you can choose to use any way you wish.” Take the time to get to know your thoughts through meditation & mindful awareness, and trust that you can rewrite any bullshit story that’s no longer serving you. Your mind is a powerful tool, and you are its master.

  1. One of my favorite affirmations from this book is: “I approve of myself.” Let this be your mantra for one month. Say it in your mind hundreds of times a day, and you’ll start to believe it. Things will shift for you.

  1. “Often what we think of as the things ‘wrong’ with us are only our expressions of our own individuality.” Own your uniqueness and see it for the gift that it is. There’s a reason it’s a part of you and no one else. It’s one of your gifts.

  1. Show up as your best self right where you are. “Always do the best you can on the job, for then, the Universe will know that you are ready to be lifted out of where you are to the next and even better place.”

  1. “I think it is our natural birthright to go from success to success all our life. If we are not doing that, either we are not in tune with our innate capabilities, or we do not believe it can be true for us, or we do not recognize our successes. When we set standards that are much too high for where we are at this moment, standards we cannot possibly achieve right now, then we will always fail.” Chunk it down. What is the next right step you can take today to get you closer to your goal?

  1. “Our breath is the most precious substance in our lives, and yet we totally take for granted when we exhale that our next breath will be there. If we did not take another breath, we would not last three minutes. Now if the Power that created us has given us enough breath to last for as long as we shall live, can we not trust that everything else we need will also be supplied?” Every morning when I wake up I repeat these two things: “Thank you God/Universe for allowing me to wake up today because it shows me I still have a purpose” & “Thank you God/Universe for giving me everything I need to be successful.” What will your morning mantra be?

  1. “Pain of any sort, to me, is an indication of guilt. Guilt always seeks punishment, and punishment creates pain.” Most of us struggle with some sort of pain. What are you feeling guilty for? Dig deep. Start the process of forgiving yourself today.
